Symbiosis - Lichen

In mutual symbiosis, exemplified by lichens, fungi join forces with algae or cyanobacteria. The fungus offers protection and shelter to its photosynthetic partner, while the photosynthetic partner reciprocates by providing the fungus with vital energy through photosynthesis.

Ernst Häckel: “Not just any fungus could partner with any algae (or cyanobacteria). Each partner has to be able to do something that the other couldn’t achieve on its own. Lichens arise in conditions too severe for either partner to survive alone. So too do lichens maybe mirror some human relationships. Two people, an otherwise unlikely fit, brought together by conditions that bring to light the fact that life is easier together.”
Symbiosis - The Evolution of Photosynthesis

As the title of this drawing suggests, it addresses the subject of the evolution of photosynthesis (a process of converting sunlight into energy). It also draws attention to my fascination with symbiosis, an ancient biological phenomenon that is not only witnessed in contemporary ecosystems but essentially played a foundational role in our planet's history. Today, as we observe the interplay of organisms in complex and countless constellations, it's imperative to recognize that symbiosis is a time-honored principle. It serves as the cornerstone upon which life's diversity has been constructed over billions of years, from the earliest partnerships to the present day.
At its core, this artwork explores the profound alliance between early life forms that gave rise to photosynthesis. This companionship between organisms, where one harnesses solar energy while the other absorbs essential nutrients, not only sustains the participants but also led to reshaping the course of early life on Earth.
In the case of a collaboration between historically distinct organisms leading to photosynthetic activity, the result was not only a successful interplay, but inaugurated the “Great Oxygenation Event”. It marks a significant juncture in our planet's narrative, when oxygen, once scarce, began to accumulate in the atmosphere. This surge of oxygen initiated the era of aerobic respiration, setting the stage for the emergence of complex life forms.
The "Evolution of Photosynthesis" is a reminder that, within the existence of life, every cooperative association has played a role. It celebrates the beauty of collaboration and acknowledges the enduring legacy of microscopic partnerships that culminated in the "Great Oxygenation Event". In essence, it celebrates symbiosis, shaping our world and underpinning the web of existence.
